Estonian materials technology startup Gelatex raises investment from Superangel

Tallinn-based Gelatex, which has developed technology to produce nanofibres for cultured meat, tissue engineering, wound care, and filtration, has raised investment from Estonian VC Superangel. The amount of the deal is undisclosed.

Founded in Tallinn in 2016 by Mart-Erik Martens and Mari-Ann Meigo Fonseca, Gelatex focuses on the production of bio-based nanofibers but can also work with synthetic and plant-based polymers. Also, Gelatex helps companies produce the materials for a specific application using the technology of halo spinning. This technology replaces traditional nanofiber production practices such as electrospinning.

Gelatex has developed vegan scaffolds for cultured meat and tissue engineering. The scaffold has a unique nanofibrous structure that mimics the natural extracellular matrix. Nanofiber scaffolds have been used as a matrix for cancer cell models in 3D drug screening: liver, breast, ovarian, and lung cancer models.

Founded in 2018 in Tallinn by Veljo Otsason and Rain Rannu, Superangel invests in pre-seed and seed startups from the Baltics and Nordics. The General Partners are Marko Oolo and Mikko Silventola. The fund focuses on deep tech, AI, mobility and logistics, fintech, and SaaS. A typical ticket size is between €300K and €800K.
